Married Lady Elizabeth de Beauchamp daughter of the Earl of Worcester in 1436. She bore him two sons, Sir Richard, who was slain at the Battle of Edgecote Moor in the summer of 1469 and Sir George, his twenty-nine year old heir.

He was among the English nobles who yielded the city of Rouen to the French later in that same year. Sir Edward was named Baron Bergavenny by parliament in the year 1450 following the death of first wife Lady Elizabeth. A steadfast ally of King Edward IV, he fought for the House of York at the Second Battle of St. Albans and Ferrybridge and Towton in March of 1461.

Baron Bergavenny served on the privy council of Richard, the Duke of York during his time as Lord Protector and was eventuallygiven additional titles and lands under his son King Edward IV.
